More Needs to be Done to Eradicate Bovine TB, Says Committee

The Northern Ireland Assembly Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development received an update earlier this week from DARD on its Test, Vaccinate and Release (TVR) model of dealing with bovine TB in badgers and on the badger sett survey.

Department must close gap in educational achievement says Committee

The large and persistent gap in literacy and numeracy between pupils who are entitled to free school meals and those who are not must not be allowed to continue. That is the key message in the Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee report launched today entitled Improving Literacy and Numeracy Achievement in Schools.

Committee Seeks Urgent Answers on Housing Executive Contracts

The Assembly Committee for Social Development was briefed today by Donald Hoodless, the recently appointed Chairperson of the Northern Ireland Housing Executive and Dr John McPeake, the Chief Executive of the Housing Executive. The meeting, focused on the recent report into the organisation’s mishandling of planned maintenance contracts which has revealed that overpayments have been made to 6 contractors totalling an estimated £18m.

Committee Emphasises Importance of Reservoir Safety Ahead of New Legislation

The Northern Ireland Assembly Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development today visited Kiltonga Reservoir in Newtownards to highlight the importance of reservoir safety. The visit was ahead of the Committee’s consideration of important new legislation from DARD which will focus on ensuring that reservoirs are managed and operated to minimise the risk of flooding.
