Topical Digests
‘Topical digest’ is the name used for a published reading list; they are a short, accessible and authoritative resource for Members and their staff on specific subjects which RaISe considers, on the basis of recent research, news reports or other developments in the public sphere, may feature in upcoming Assembly business. RaISe will endeavour to compile and publish these on a wide range of subject areas.

Algal blooms in Lough NeaghThis Topical Digest provides a reading list on the issue of algal blooms in Lough Neagh. Lough Neagh, the largest lake in the UK, has been experiencing recurrent algal blooms, notably in the summer of 2023 restricting recreational and commercial usage of the lake. Concerns have been raised about the water quality and ecological health of the lake. This digest draws upon experiences of algal blooms locally in Northern Ireland, the UK, and Europe, bringing together background publications, key legislation, research papers, government department publications, a briefing paper, and local media. |
