Committee of the Regions (CoR)

CoR was established in 1994 as a political assembly that provides local and regional authorities with a voice at the heart of the EU.  It was set up to address two main issues:

  1. Ensuring that local and regional representatives have a say in the development of new EU laws.
  2. Ensuring that EU citizens feel involved.

The body organises its work through six specialist Commissions who examine the detail of proposals and draw up a draft opinion.  The draft opinion is then discussed at a plenary and if a majority approves it, the draft is adopted as the opinion of the CoR and is sent back to the Commission for transfer to the Parliament and Council.

Membership: To be confirmed.
