A taste of life working for the Northern Ireland Assembly was on the agenda this week for people with learning disabilities when the Committee for Employment and Learning hosted a special work experience event at Parliament Buildings. Through a series of informal round-table discussions, staff from across the Assembly gave participants an insight into the work they do in the Assembly.

Speaking after the event, Chairperson of the Committee, Robin Swann MLA, said: "The event gave people with learning disabilities a unique opportunity to find out what it is like to work behind the scenes at the Northern Ireland Assembly. We know how important work experience is for people as they take steps to find employment, and it is particularly valuable for those with learning disabilities, as it can boost their self-esteem and lead to greater independence.

"On a wider level, we hope that this event can help to raise awareness of the benefits — for individuals and employers — of offering those with learning disabilities an opportunity to gain the experience that can help them to fulfill their career aspirations."
