Assembly Committee Marks World Suicide Prevention Day
Session: 2012/2013
Date: 10 September 2012
Reference: HSSPS 01/12/13
The Assembly’s Health Committee today hosted a special event to mark World Suicide Prevention Day. The event saw some 80 young people meet with MLAs and Ministers from all parties to discuss ways of preventing suicide. MLAs then signed a pledge stating that the needs of young people should be at the heart of all that government does.
Chairperson of the Health Committee, Sue Ramsey MLA said: “My Committee was honoured to take part in World Suicide Prevention Day here at Parliament Buildings. All MLAs have dealt with heartbroken families living with the aftermath of suicide or attempted suicide and we know the despair felt by the families and communities affected.
“Preventing suicide, dealing with the underlying causes, is something that must be at the heart of all that we do, and this event gave us the opportunity to make a public commitment to do just that.
“This commitment is more than just signing a piece of paper. All areas of government--from housing, employment and education--must play their part in giving communities and individuals hope. And it is hope and practical assistance that will stop people from taking their lives.”
