Session: 2009/2010
Date: 27 May 2010
Reference: CAL 14/09/10
Making maths fun and interesting to children was the theme of an event hosted today by the Northern Ireland Assembly Committee for Culture, Arts and Leisure. Children’s theatre company, Cahoots, performed a 20 minute extract from their show entitled ‘Math-a-Magic’ at Parliament Buildings.
Chair of the Committee, Barry McElduff who opened the event said: “The performance today was terrific entertainment and a fantastic way to teach children about the magic of maths. It showed how learning can be fun and was a big hit with everyone in the audience.
“Cahoots demonstrated how some magic tricks rely on mathematical principles and I can see how it would appeal to children of all ages. Our Committee is very supportive of the arts and we were delighted to have Cahoots perform at Parliament Buildings.
The interactive display was full of illusions and magical effects involving mathematical skills such as estimation and calculation and was watched by Committee members and Assembly staff.
The Committee hosted the event with Cahoots as part of the Committee’s ongoing commitment to showcase local arts.
