Our ref: FOI 36-26

23 July 2026

Freedom of Information Act 2000

I am writing to confirm that the Northern Ireland Assembly Commission (Assembly Commission) has processed your request dated 11 June 2026 in line with the Freedom of Information Act 2000. In your request, you asked:

'How many electric vehicle (EV) charging points are currently located to the rear of Parliament Buildings?

When were these installed?

Can the Assembly provide figures it has on record which shows what the total energy used by those using the chargers at Parliament Buildings since they were introduced?

Can the Assembly provide figures it has on record which show the total cost of the electricity used by the chargers during that time?'

Our response

1. How many electric vehicle (EV) charging points are currently located to the rear of Parliament Buildings?

The Assembly Commission currently has 6 electric vehicle (EV) charging points located to the rear of Parliament Buildings.

2. When were these installed?

The Assembly Commission's EV charging points, located to the rear of Parliament Buildings, were installed in phases. Two charging points were installed in 2015, a further two in 2018, and the final two were installed in 2024.

3. Can the Assembly provide figures it has on record which shows what the total energy used by those using the chargers at Parliament Buildings since they were introduced?

The EV charging infrastructure is not metered and electricity consumption is not separately recorded from the wider building supply; usage is therefore included within the overall electricity costs for Parliament Buildings. As such, the total energy used is not held.

4. Can the Assembly provide figures it has on record which show the total cost of the electricity used by the chargers during that time?

The EV charging infrastructure is not metered and electricity consumption is not separately recorded from the wider building supply; usage is therefore included within the overall electricity costs for Parliament Buildings. As such, information on the cost of electricity used by the EV charging infrastructure is not held.

The Assembly Commission has estimated that bookings from the six charging points between 11-15 May 2026 cost in the region of £324, on the basis of the number of bookings that week, however weekly usage and associated costs are likely to be significantly lower during periods of recess.
