Speaker announces he will not be seeking re-election to the Assembly

At the start of Assembly business today, the Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, Mitchel McLaughlin MLA, announced that he would not be seeking re-election to the Assembly at the election and consequently would also not be seeking re-election as Speaker.

Public Asked to Give Views on the Assembly and Executive Reform (Assembly Opposition) Bill

The Assembly and Executive Review Committee has announced the beginning of its scrutiny of the Assembly and Executive Reform (Assembly Opposition) Bill. The Private Members’ Bill, introduced by John McCallister MLA, sets as its principal objective the formation of an official Opposition in the Assembly.

Committee Voices Concern on Cuts to AFBI Budget

The Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development received a briefing on Tuesday 6 October from the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) on its 2020 Strategy. Members were interested to learn more about how recent budget cuts will affect the delivery of the strategy and in particular the Institute’s future capacity to carry out crucial agricultural research.
