The Northern Ireland Assembly has today announced that Mr Robin Swann MLA has been elected to the newly created post of Chairperson of the NI Assembly Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA).

Committee to refer Minister to Public Prosecution Service

The Committee for Regional Development today agreed to refer the Minister for Regional Development to the Public Prosecution Service (PPS) for failing to respond to a requirement to produce a Project Assessment Review (PAR) report prepared by the Major Project Authority of the Cabinet Office into the Coleraine to Derry/Londonderry Phase 2 Railway project.

Speaker to use his Time in Office to Highlight the Issue of Respect

The Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, Mitchel McLaughlin MLA, tonight hosted the Speaker’s annual St Patrick’s event in Parliament Buildings. The Speaker used the event to make a wide ranging speech setting out his approach to his period of office and his intention to be guided by the theme of “respect”.

More Women in Politics a must, says Assembly Committee

The report ‘Women in Politics and the Northern Ireland Assembly’ includes a number of recommendations to make the political landscape a more welcoming place for women. The report also sets out ways of encouraging greater participation at both local and national levels and in public life in general.

Assembly reform would have significant impact on gender balance of Assembly

The Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly tonight hosted an event in Parliament Buildings to mark International Women’s Day this weekend.  The Speaker introduced a discussion with Dame Rosemary Butler, Presiding Officer of the National Assembly for Wales, who had accepted an invitation from the Speaker to discuss her own successful campaign to encourage more women into public life.
