Agriculture Committee Raises Concerns for Industry

Members of the Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development met with Westminster MPs and the Groceries Code Adjudicator to raise issues of concern to local farmers.

Act of Remembrance 2015

On 2 November 2015, I wrote to every Member outlining the arrangements I was making for Armistice Day this year and my focus to ensure “that as many Members as possible should have an opportunity to mark remembrance”. I was greatly encouraged to see people from all political persuasions and none gathered in the Great Hall on Wednesday last for what observers consider to be a record attendance. Many people welcomed the united nature and tone of the programme but I clearly appreciate that the event did not satisfy the expectations of all.

Students Challenge Local Politicians to “Talk Politics” in Armagh

Following on from a series of successful ‘Let's Talk Politics’ events aimed at young people, sixth form students from schools in Newry and Armagh and South Down constituencies will take up the challenge to quiz their local political representatives on the issues that matter to them and their local communities.

Committee Supports Greater Penalties to Protect Animal Welfare

The Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development received a briefing on Tuesday 10 November from Departmental officials on proposed draft amendments to increase penalties for offences under the Welfare of Animals Act (NI) 2011.

Parliament Buildings to be Illuminated for Armistice Day

Parliament Buildings will be lit up in red on the evening of Wednesday 11th November 2015 for the first time to mark Armistice Day. It was one of four days the Assembly Commission selected itself for the Building to be illuminated during the year.

Speaker announces he will not be seeking re-election to the Assembly

At the start of Assembly business today, the Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, Mitchel McLaughlin MLA, announced that he would not be seeking re-election to the Assembly at the election and consequently would also not be seeking re-election as Speaker.
