The British Irish Chamber of Commerce and sponsor Ulster Bank have come together to address the various challenges and opportunities that Brexit has brought about for business interests in the UK and Ireland. This event will be the fourth of the #BusinessBeyondBrexit series which will look at the impact of Brexit, its eventual outcome and the business landscape beyond it, seeking to combine the broader bilateral picture with a unique regional focus.
The UK remains Ireland’s biggest two-way trading partner. With Brexit due to occur on 31 October, this conference will explore the implications for Ireland and Northern Ireland, focusing on the economy, trade, agriculture and employment. It will include contributions from experts in their field who will present the latest findings in light of the state of affairs at that point, i.e. on the brink of Brexit. It will also enable substantive discussion through Question and Answer sessions. This event is a free information session on EU citizens' rights and Brexit, and is a part of Seraphus' EU Citizens' Rights Roadshow of 14 events across the entire UK.
Chris Desira (adviser to the European Commission on UK immigration law and Director of Seraphus) will provide up-to-date legal information about EU citizens' rights in the context of Brexit and the EU Settlement Scheme. He will explain how to successfully apply to the Scheme in order to protect residence and rights whatever type of Brexit occurs. After the presentation there will be an audience Q and A. Other organisations from around NI assisting vulnerable Europeans to apply for settled status will also be in attendance to talk about their work. |

The Harri Holkeri Lecture Series celebrates and recognises the contribution of the late Finnish Prime Minister Harri Holkeri to the Northern Ireland peace process. His aim of transforming conflict and promoting social justice in Northern Ireland and across the world is shared by the Mitchell Institute. The Institute will host a reception in the Canada Room from 5.00pm. The lecture will be in the Council Chamber from 5.30pm. |

Brexit raises the possibility of substantive holes and incoherency in existing Northern Irish environmental law and policy, governance gaps with the loss of the EU institutions, and a risk of future stagnation or deterioration in environmental standards. However, it is also essential to consider the challenges posed by Brexit for all-island environmental governance and how these might be addressed. One document that might play a key role is the Good Friday/Belfast Agreement, which includes relevant components on the environment and human rights. |

This one-day conference from BrexitLawNI and the Equality Coalition will examine the risks of hardened entitlement boundaries between different groups of citizens in post-Brexit Northern Ireland. The existing paradigm of two main citizenship categories (EU and non-EU) will be expanded to include many more sub-divisions should the current Brexit proposals proceed (as is shown in the table below).
Topics explored at the conference will include: entitlements differentials, citizenship status and rights, racial profiling, compliance with the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement, ‘hostile environment’ measures, the scope of the ‘Common Travel Area’, and the retained EU citizens’ rights provisions under the EU Settlement Scheme. |
