Brexit and the New EU Institutional Cycle

The Stronger Together partnership is delivering a support project on the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS), a scheme set to protect the rights of EU/EEA & Swiss citizens to continue to reside and work in NI post Brexit. This project information event will be followed by a multi-lingual EUSS registration clinic.

The British Irish Chamber of Commerce and sponsor Ulster Bank have come together to address the various challenges and opportunities that Brexit has brought about for business interests in the UK and Ireland. This event will be the fourth of the #BusinessBeyondBrexit series which will look at the impact of Brexit, its eventual outcome and the business landscape beyond it, seeking to combine the broader bilateral picture with a unique regional focus.

The UK remains Ireland’s biggest two-way trading partner. Therefore, it is essential that Irish businesses across the country are aware of the consequences of the UK’s exit from the EU and plan and prepare accordingly.The event will feature an economic overview from Ulster Bank, as well as a case study presentation from a  local business. This will be followed by a panel discussion.

UKFT Brexit Guidance for fashion and textile businesses: Belfast

The UK Fashion & Textile Association is holding a series of free events across England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales over the coming weeks to provide practical advice and support for UK fashion and textile businesses in the lead up to the exit from the European Union.

UKFT will outline the actions that companies should be taking to minimise disruption to trade, with a chance to ask questions on specific issues that affect their business.

On the brink of Brexit: the economic consequences for the island of Ireland

With Brexit due to occur on 31 October, this conference will explore the implications for Ireland and Northern Ireland, focusing on the economy, trade, agriculture and employment.

It will include contributions from experts in their field who will present the latest findings in light of the state of affairs at that point, i.e. on the brink of Brexit. It will also enable substantive discussion through Question and Answer sessions. The intention is to provide the most up to date knowledge on Brexit and its all-island dimensions for a broad, informed audience.

Managing EU Workers post-Brexit Workshop

The end to Free Movement of EU Citizens post Brexit will impact on businesses in the Greater Newry Area, which rely heavily on EU labour.

This workshop will provide local businesses with an overview of proposed changes and how to put plans in place to prepare for any changes brought about after 31st October.

EU Citizens' Rights and Brexit: Craigavon Info Session

This event is a free information session on EU citizens' rights and Brexit, and is a part of Seraphus' EU Citizens' Rights Roadshow of 14 events across the entire UK.

Chris Desira (adviser to the European Commission on UK immigration law and Director of Seraphus) will provide up-to-date legal information about EU citizens' rights in the context of Brexit and the EU Settlement Scheme. He will explain how to successfully apply to the Scheme in order to protect residence and rights whatever type of Brexit occurs. After the presentation there will be an audience Q and A.

Other organisations from around NI assisting vulnerable Europeans to apply for settled status will also be in attendance to talk about their work.

NI Public Sector Chairs’ Forum

Brexit is now at the top of everyone’s agenda and there remains considerable uncertainty about what the eventual process will be.  At this meeting Mike Brennan, Deputy Secretary, Department for the Economy, who has been significantly involved in NI EU Exit work, will give a briefing on the potential impacts of Brexit and the emerging preparedness plans already in place.  Following Mike’s presentations, there will be a  wider discussion on what board room colleagues in Arms Length Bodies could be doing to support the system in this time of uncertainty.

Follow up Brexit Hackathon

Last year PPMA, Matrix-SCM and Local Government Staff Commission hosted a hackathon in Northern Ireland as part of PPMA’s research programme with Brexit being one of its key topics. A hackathon is a quick fire, high pressure, high intensity ideas session and it tackled some of the workforce related Brexit challenges in a different way.

The purpose behind the follow up hackathon is to sense check if the proposals that were developed from the BREXIT Hackathon still hold true;  what if anything needs to change; what are the implications if a ‘No Deal’ BREXIT is the outcome; how can we get impetus to deliver the proposals.

The Harri Holkeri Lecture Series celebrates and recognises the contribution of the late Finnish Prime Minister Harri Holkeri to the Northern Ireland peace process.  His aim of transforming conflict and promoting social justice in Northern Ireland and across the world is shared by the Mitchell Institute.

Our Rights, Our Future

Brexit, Devolution and Civil Society

The Wales Civil Society Forum on Brexit, The Civil Society Brexit Project Scotland and the Human Rights Consortium in Northern Ireland invite you to take part in a two day conference aimed at third sector organisations on Brexit, Devolution and Civil Society.

Brexit as seen from Brussels - A free talk by Dr Nicholas Whyte

Nicholas Whyte, Visiting Professor at Ulster University and a Senior Director at the Brussels office of consultancy APCO Worldwide, has been monitoring the Brexit process at close quarters since the beginning. All-Island Environmental Governance post-Brexit and the Good Friday/Belfast Agreement

Brexit raises the possibility of substantive holes and incoherency in existing Northern Irish environmental law and policy, governance gaps with the loss of the EU institutions, and a risk of future stagnation or deterioration in environmental standards. However, it is also essential to consider the challenges posed by Brexit for all-island environmental governance and how these might be addressed. One document that might play a key role is the Good Friday/Belfast Agreement, which includes relevant components on the environment and human rights.
This event will include an introduction into some of the challenges to all-island environmental governance, followed by a presentation of the findings of a report authored by Alison Hough, BL,  with discussion regarding the potential for future all-island environmental cooperation.

InterTradeIreland Brexit event

InterTradeIreland has joined with Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Federation of Small Businesses, Institute of Directors and Invest Northern Ireland to host this free event focusing on pragmatic steps businesses can take to prepare for Brexit may; bringing a host of information on support and funding under one roof.

Once the UK leaves the European Union on 29 March 2019, the right to free movement will no longer be automatic. Employers will be faced with a new immigration system to manage and ensure all employees from the EEA have the right to work in Northern Ireland and the UK.

Post-Brexit Citizenship Status: Divided by the Rules?

This one-day conference from BrexitLawNI and the Equality Coalition will examine the risks of hardened entitlement boundaries between different groups of citizens in post-Brexit Northern Ireland. The existing paradigm of two main citizenship categories (EU and non-EU) will be expanded to include many more sub-divisions should the current Brexit proposals proceed (as is shown in the table below).

Topics explored at the conference will include: entitlements differentials, citizenship status and rights, racial profiling, compliance with the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement, ‘hostile environment’ measures, the scope of the ‘Common Travel Area’, and the retained EU citizens’ rights provisions under the EU Settlement Scheme.

Public Event: ‘Brexit’ – Trade Union Perspectives

As part of the university's ongoing contribution to the debates around UK withdrawal from the EU, there will be an event open to the public exploring the views within the trade union movement on how best to defend and advance the interests of their members in the present state of relations between the UK and the EU.

Katy Hayward (leading Queen's expert on 'Brexit') will start off the discussion by giving a brief 'user friendly' technical summary of where negotiations and future prospects are at the time of the event.

That will be followed by opening comments from a panel of leading trade union speakers representing a range of positions within the trade union movement on ‘Brexit’, including the Irish and GB dimensions alongside the focus on Northern Ireland.

The discussion will then be opened up to the floor.
