This workshop aims to bring the voice of young people, aged 16-25, to be heard within the Brexit debate in Northern Ireland. This interactive session will open discussion about the fears, concerns, hopes and aspirations of young people, and the role Brexit plays within these. The contributions on the day will feed directly into a policy brief on the views of young people on Brexit, which will form the beginning of a longer term conversation on the issue led by Ulster University.
This event is part of the IMAGINE Festival of Politics and Ideas.

'Brexit in Historical Perspective' - The 6th Annual Dónal Nevin Lecture (5.00-8.00pm)

Brexit is arguably the most significant geopolitical challenge that Western Europe has had to face since the fall of the Berlin Wall. Added to this, the rise of populism calls into question the future of the European Union itself. In order to fully understand the origin and impact of these challenges it is necessary to put them into some historical context. Professor O’Rourke will consider the issues presented by Brexit by asking the questions ‘How did we get here and what might the future hold?’
Dr Hayward, who has presented widely on the topic of Brexit and Northern Ireland/Ireland, will provide a formal response to the lecture by Professor O’Rourke. In doing so, Dr Hayward will contextualise and comment on the arguments made in relation to Northern Ireland and allow the audience to engage with how Brexit and more generally the anti-globalisation backlash has played out in Northern Ireland. |

CCBS Policy Seminar: EU Cohesion Policy beyond 2020 (10am - 1pm) |
This seminar brings together a number of experts to debate the shape of the EU’s Cohesion Policy beyond 2020. Its future priorities, geographical scope, and its funding are currently being discussed throughout the European Union as part of the wider debate on the EU’s overarching priorities and how these will be financed by the EU’s budget. The decisions taken by EU leaders will affect the capacity and extent to which the European Union will operate beyond 2020, and doing so in the context of a EU of 27 Member States following the UK’s departure. However, although the UK may be leaving the EU, that does not necessarily mean that Cohesion Policy post-2020 will no longer have relevance for Northern Ireland, not least because its neighbour will continue to be an EU Member State. |

In this talk, Professor Danny Dorling will discuss: “Immigration has been suggested as the reason why a narrow majority of people in the UK voted for Brexit. The concept was used to stoke up fear in areas of low immigration. However, immigration is not what sets the UK apart from other EU nations as unusual. The real reason for the Brexit vote was widespread and rising dissatisfaction with living standards as a result of rising inequalities. This talk concentrates on that and the first signs of a possible fall in economic inequality, ironically possibly partly as a consequence of the Brexit vote.” This event is part of the IMAGINE Festival of Politics and Ideas. |

CCBS Annual Conference 2018: The Good Friday Agreement in All its Parts: Safeguarding the Totality of Relationships | As the 20th Anniversary of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement approaches, this conference considers how we continue to put into practice our commitment to the totality of relations within and between these islands that it represents. All of this coincides with the negotiations over the UK’s withdrawal from the EU in which issues related to Ireland/Northern Ireland are central. The negotiations have indicated that there are at least 141 policy areas/powers returning from the EU which intersect with the devolution settlement in Northern Ireland. While all parties to the negotiations have stated their support for the Agreement “in all its parts”, it is not clear if there is common understanding of what this means or what are their associated obligations. |

This paper presents the findings from the 'Bordering on Brexit study' led by Dr Hayward on behalf of the Irish Central Border Area Network, which gathered the views of those on both sides of the border regarding Brexit. The paper considers the degree to which these perspectives have been taken into account in the approach taken to Brexit by policymakers at local and national levels. It looks in particular at the Joint Report agreed by the EU and UK negotiators on 8th December and assesses whether it constitutes firm reassurance on Ireland/Northern Ireland issues, especially for those living and working in the border region. |
