ACPAB 01/20/21
The Chairperson of the Northern Ireland Assembly Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Mr William Humphrey MBE MLA today expressed his condolences following the recent announcement of the death of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
Mr Humphrey MBE MLA said: “It was with deep regret and sorrow that we learned on Friday of the passing of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and on behalf of the Members of the Assembly’s Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Branch, I wish to express our deepest sympathies.
“Prince Philip was a remarkable man who devoted his life to public service and duty both at home and abroad. His passing is a great loss to all of us, including the vast range of charities he supported and championed over the years, and it will be keenly felt by the people of Northern Ireland.
Mr Humphrey continued: “Prince Philip was no stranger to Northern Ireland, having visited close to 60 times over the years and it is perhaps fitting, given that we have the highest participation levels in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, that his final visit here in 2017 was to meet 115 young people whose lives were immeasurably enriched through completing the scheme.”
Mr Humphrey concluded: “While Prince Philip’s passing will be mourned deeply in Northern Ireland and across the Commonwealth, our thoughts today are with Her Majesty The Queen and the entire Royal family who have lost a beloved and irreplaceable family member. We trust that they will take great comfort in his legacy and the impact his life, work and dedication to duty has had on the people of Northern Ireland.”
