Older people from across Northern Ireland gathered at Parliament Buildings yesterday (Thursday 15 October) for the Older People's Parliament.

The event, which has been co-designed with organisations and groups from across the sector, provided an important opportunity for older people to share their lived experiences, raise issues directly with Ministers and discuss matters affecting older people and their communities.

During the event, delegates tabled questions to the Minister of Health, Minister for Communities, Minister for Infrastructure, and the Minister of Justice on a broad range of issues identified by older people.

Topics included health and social care services, support for carers, financial security, age-friendly housing, accessible transport, protection from scams and abuse, active ageing, advocacy services and age discrimination.

Opening proceedings, the Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, Edwin Poots MLA, welcomed participants to Parliament Buildings and highlighted the importance of ensuring older people have opportunities to engage directly with decision-makers.

Speaking after the event, the Speaker said: "The Older People's Parliament has once again demonstrated the value of providing opportunities for people to engage with Ministers and have their views heard.

"The issues discussed are matters that affect many people across Northern Ireland. The contributions made by participants helped highlight the experiences, challenges and priorities of older people in our communities.

"I would like to thank everyone who took part and contributed to the discussions."
