Education Committee Statement regarding Public Disorder

Session: Session currently unavailable

Date: 10 June 2026

Reference: 10/06/26

The Assembly’s Committee for Education today made clear its unanimous abhorrence of the racialised public disorder overnight.

Speaking on behalf of the Committee, Chairperson Nick Mathison MLA, said:

“The Committee deplores the very frightening, divisive and traumatic effects of this on young people in school, particularly during exam time. “The Committee urges the Minister to take steps with Executive colleagues to protect the undisrupted education and safety of all children; and to make every effort to safeguard them from bad actors who would implicate them in criminal activity and spoil their futures.

“The Committee reiterates its previous position that every young person in Northern Ireland whatever their background must be respected, protected and supported.”
