The Northern Ireland Assembly’s Infrastructure Committee today welcomes the announcement by the Infrastructure Minister of a phased review into taxi regulation, which arises from the Committee’s extensive discussions and engagement with a wide-range of representatives operating within the taxi sector under the current regulations.
Committee Chairperson, Deborah Erskine MLA said: “The Committee has worked extensively on this issue and will continue to have a keen in interest in the regulatory requirements of the taxi sector.
“The first phase of this review will focus on Class C licences and the associated issues that affect a broad range of operators such as the funeral and wedding car markets but also novelty and Uber-style operators.
“Throughout its engagement, the Committee has noted the diverse range of businesses operating under the existing regulations and believes that, given the changing needs and habits of society, this review is essential to examine our existing approaches in Northern Ireland and to identify opportunities that nurture a vibrant and competitive market that is proportionate but does not compromise the safety of the public.”
Since resuming business, the Committee has taken a particular interest in the regulatory requirements for the taxi sector in Northern Ireland and has received evidence from the Licensed Taxi Operators Association, the Inclusive Mobility Transport Advisory Committee (IMTAC) and the Northern Ireland Wedding Vehicle Association.
In addition, the Committee met informally with representatives from the National Association of Funeral Directors.
Committee Chairperson, Deborah Erskine MLA further stated: “As a Committee, we are proud that our focus on this area has helped the Department for Infrastructure to recognise the need for this review and to ultimately take action.
“The Committee will continue to carefully monitor the development and progress of the first phase of the review, and looks forward to the commencement of subsequent phases for other taxi classes.
“We strongly encourage those regulated or impacted under the existing regulations to engage with the Department for Infrastructure when its consultation commences to ensure that their voices are heard”.
