Mr Lyons (The Minister for Communities): Today, I am launching the public consultation on a new Public Libraries Policy for Northern Ireland, delivering on the commitment I made in July 2024 as part of my Heritage, Culture and Creativity Programme.

As Minister for Communities, and as a longstanding library member myself, I know the difference our libraries make to people's lives and to the communities they serve.

Our public libraries are places where people come to learn, connect, discover and be inspired. They are trusted, welcoming spaces that support learning, wellbeing, creativity and digital inclusion, while providing a growing range of community services and activities.

Libraries are not simply buildings that house books. They are vibrant community assets that continue to evolve and respond to changing needs.

Northern Ireland is uniquely placed, with a single public library authority, Libraries NI, delivering services across the region with support from my Department. That model brings real strengths and opportunities for the future.

The consultation I am launching today is an opportunity for the public, stakeholders and library users to help shape the future of our library service. The new policy will provide the framework for how my Department and Libraries NI support and develop public libraries over the next decade, ensuring they continue to meet the needs and aspirations of current and future generations.

I want this policy to be shaped by the people who use, value and support our libraries.

I encourage everyone with an interest in our public libraries to take part in the consultation from today. The consultation document and supporting materials are available on the Department for Communities website.
