Primary Care Prescribing

Synopsis: This briefing paper looks at selected aspects of primary care prescribing in Northern Ireland (NI) including: How the prescribing process operates; Overall prescribing patterns; Prescribing of generic drugs – potential savings; The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Report on Primary Care Prescribing (March 2015); and Examples are also included of some European and international models in terms of prescription charging policies, particularly focusing on models with a means-tested element.
