3. Draft Minutes

Agreed: The Committee agreed the minutes of the meeting held on 25 July 2024.

4. Matters Arising

There were no matters arising.

5. Regulation (EU) 2024/1849 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 June 2024 amending Regulation (EU) 2017/852 on mercury as regards dental amalgam and other mercury-added products subject to export, import and manufacturing restrictions – Consideration of survey responses

The Committee considered eleven responses received in its consultation on Regulation (EU) 2024/1849 on mercury as regards dental amalgam and other mercury-added products subject to export, import and manufacturing restrictions.

The Committee noted a response from the UK Government regarding its assessment of Regulation (EU) 2024/1849 and the European Commission’s Notice of 19 July 2024.

The Committee noted that the consultation responses will be included in a draft report for consideration on 15 August 2024.

6. Regulation (EU) 2024/1938 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 June 2024 on standards of quality and safety for substances of human origin intended for human application and repealing Directives 2002/98/EC and 2004/23/EC - Departmental oral evidence

The Committee considered Regulation (EU) 2024/1938 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 June 2024 on standards of quality and safety for substances of human origin intended for human application and repealing Directives 2002/98/EC and 2004/23/EC.

 The following officials joined the meeting at 10.19 am.

Ryan Wilson, Director of Secondary Care, Department of Health

Brenda McGilligan, Head of EU Futures Relations Branch, Department of Health.

The officials gave evidence on Regulation (EU) 2024/1938.

A question and answer session followed.

The evidence session was reported by Hansard.

The officials left the meeting at 10.37 am.

The Committee noted that a Citizen Space survey had launched with a closing date of 7 August 2024, and that the responses and a draft report would be considered on 15 August 2024.

7. Correspondence

There was no correspondence for consideration.

8. Chairperson’s Business

The Chairperson informed the Committee that he and the deputy Chairperson held an introductory meeting with Nick Thomas-Symonds, Cabinet Office Minister for the Constitution and European Union Relations, in Parliament Buildings on Tuesday 30 July 2024.

9. Any Other Business

Agreed: The Committee agreed to write to the British Dental Association to seek clarity on its view of the implications of Regulation (EU) 2024/1849 and the European Commission’s Notice of 19July 2024.

The Committee extended its congratulations to Suzanne Patton, Clerical Officer to the Committee, on the occasion of her wedding.

The Chair requested that Members give early notice of any apologies ahead of scheduled Committee meetings.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday 15th August 2024 at 10:00am in Parliament Buildings.
