The Chairperson of the Committee for Education, Mr Mervyn Storey, took the chair.

2. Discussion on the Review of Teacher Education

The Committees discussed their concerns regarding the outcome of the consultation on the Review of Teacher Education, which was carried out jointly by the Department of Education and the Department for Employment and Learning.

Agreed: The Committees agreed to write to the Department of Education and the Department for Employment and Learning requesting the rationale behind the reduction in the number of post-graduate teacher education places in the University of Ulster and Queens University, Belfast, whilst maintaining or increasing the number of places at the teacher training colleges. The Committee also requested information on the previous 5 years’ allocation across all five tuition providers.

Agreed: The Committee agreed to draft a joint response to the Review of Teacher Education.
