All Assembly Members, including Ministers, will be entitled to receive a resettlement allowance.  Under the Determination a Member who -

a)    Is a Member of the Assembly immediately before its dissolution; And

b)   does not stand for re-election, or

c)    who is not returned to the Assembly

will be entitled to receive a Resettlement Allowance.

The allowance shall be equal to the relevant percentage of the “salary as a Member” which was payable immediately prior to dissolution.  The relevant percentage is based on the age of the former Member at dissolution and the number of complete years of service as a Member at dissolution.  “Salary as a Member” has the same meaning as in the Assembly Members’ Pension Scheme (Northern Ireland) 2008.

Under current legislation only that part of the allowance in excess of £30,000, is subject to income tax and this will be deducted at source by the Payroll Team.

The NI Assembly does not hold details of severance pay for Ministers.   Details of resettlement costs are provided under ‘other expenditure’ in the attached link.  Payments under ‘other expenditure’ include childcare, temporary secretarial expenditure, support staff mileage, disability allowance, support staff statutory redundancy payments and the cost of employer pension contributions paid for support staff.
