Display of Commemorative Items
Prior to the refurbishment of Parliament Buildings for the NI Assembly, there were two glass cabinets on the first floor outside the Members /Strangers Dining Rooms. These cabinets contained large items of silver and commemorative items (eg Plates) relating to the NI Parliament and Prime Minister Lord Craigavon. Gifts from Commonwealth Parliamentary Associations. Ornate keys presented to mark the occasion of the opening of Orange Halls in N. Ireland. There were also a beautiful polished table and the very large commemorative urn that was in a glass cabinet at the foot of the grand staircase.
The items displayed in the two glass cases belonged to the Craigavon and Glentoran families, these collections have since been returned to the families and are no longer in the possession of the Northern Ireland Assembly. The table is in a secure storage facility as currently, due to space restrictions there is no suitable place for it to be located. The urn in question, I believe to be the Elizabeth II Coronation Vase, this is currently on display in a room within Parliament Buildings.
