Principles of the Disabled People’s Parliament

This Parliament recognises and respects people who choose to identify as people with disabilities, focusing on the person first and their condition or impairment second. People with disabilities is terminology most associated with UNCRPD and the Human Rights Model.

 

This Parliament recognises and respects people who choose to identify as disabled people recognising people with impairments or conditions are disabled by barriers created by society. Disabled people is terminology most associated with the Social Model.

 

This Parliament recognises and respects people who choose not to identify as either people with disabilities or disabled people and may choose an identity relating to their condition or impairment.

 

This Parliament recognises and respects people who have a hidden / invisible condition or impairment.

 

This Parliament recognises and respects self-defined models such as Deaf culture.

 

This Parliament recognises that discrimination is common to all people regardless of how they choose to identify.
