Branding Will Help the Creative Industries Move Forward, says Committee

Clear branding, leadership and collaboration will help to provide a boost to the Creative Industries in Northern Ireland. That is the message from the Committee for Culture, Arts and Leisure in its report published today on maximising the potential of the Creative Industries.

Launching the Report, Chairperson of the Committee, Miss Michelle McIlveen MLA, said: "The Committee is convinced that there is considerable economic and social potential within our Creative Industries. That is why we have made a number of recommendations to provide better co-ordination and support for the further development of this sector.

"From our discussions with those in the Creative Industries, education providers and government departments it is clear that, while there is a great deal of positive work going on, there are gaps in support mechanisms.

"The Committee heard that it would be helpful for the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure to raise its profile as the lead department for the Creative Industries; and that there is a need for better co-ordination across Government, including a 'one-stop-shop' for advice, guidance and support; and better education and skills development around Creative Industries and creative careers."

Miss McIlveen continued: "The potential of our Creative Industries must be fully exploited and utilised – there are jobs that can be created in this sector and it can be a driver for economic growth. The recommendations of our report will provide useful guidance for the Minister of Culture, Arts and Leisure to inform her policies for the sector. Members will offer their support and will work with the Minister and her Executive Colleagues in taking forward the Committee's recommendations."

Other key recommendations from the report include: better collaboration and co-ordination with the Department for Employment and Learning the Department of Education, Invest NI, local government and NESTA; maximising opportunities from the European Union; deliver a 'STEAM'(Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) agenda to maximise the use of art and creativity in schools; and further refine the Creative Industries Innovation Fund.
