Committee for Culture, Arts and Leisure meets for the first time

Mr Barry McElduff, Chairperson of the Culture, Arts and Leisure Committee welcomed members to the first meeting today.

He said:
“I am very pleased to announce the Committee for Culture, Arts and Leisure met with the Minister and senior officials of the Department today and discussed the future key issues facing the Department over the coming months. We discussed a wide range of subjects at the meeting including the plans for the multi-sports stadium, the proposed Strategy for Sport, funding for the arts and cultural activities, the future of libraries, angling and waterways, and language issues.

“The remit of the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure is such that it touches the lives of everyone in this society. The Committee looks forward to working closely with the Department on all of the aspects of its work.”

The Committee agreed its Forward Work Programme, including a series of introductory briefings from the Department and other organisations, up to the summer recess.

The Committee will next meet on 24 May 2006 at 10.30am.
