Agriculture Committee Continue Review of Bovine TB with Visit to England
The Assembly Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development will continue its Review into Bovine Tuberculosis (TB) by travelling to England to visit a range of important experts on this issue.  The Committee’s itinerary will focus on specific aspects of Bovine TB control that are not practised in Northern Ireland: namely the proposed English badger cull and badger vaccination.

The Assembly Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development received its first briefing today, Tuesday 24 April as part of its Review into Bovine Tuberculosis (TB).

Bovine TB Top of Agenda for Agriculture Committee

The Assembly Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development today launched a Review into Bovine Tuberculosis (TB).  The Review will examine all possible measures that could be taken in Northern Ireland to reduce and eradicate the disease in cattle.  The Committee will also give some thought to the costs and benefits of the various measures available.

Committee Concerned with Impact of 'Green' CAP Proposals
As a result of concerns with draft proposals in the Common Agriculture Policy (CAP), the Assembly Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development met with local stakeholders today to discuss the impact the ‘green’ proposals could have.  The proposals aim to benefit the climate and environment by making agriculture more sustainable and by financially rewarding farmers who follow certain agricultural practices.

Reforming the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) continued to be top of the agenda for the Northern Ireland Assembly Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development when Members attended a meeting on the issue in Dublin last week.

Assembly Committee Agrees Terms of Submission to Westminster Committee
At its meeting today the Northern Ireland Assembly Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development agreed the terms of its submission to the EFRA Committee Inquiry ‘Greening the Common Agricultural Policy’. The Committee is also seeking to give oral evidence in support of that submission. If that request is granted, this would be the first time that an Assembly Committee would give oral evidence to an Inquiry by a Westminster Committee.

Assembly Committee and Oireachtas Committee Meet to Discuss Common Concerns
At an informal meeting today the Northern Ireland Assembly Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development discussed common concerns with Members of the Joint Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture from the Houses of the Oireachtas. Issues of concern to both Committees included Animal Health, the EU’s current consultation on Common Agriculture Policy (CAP), and Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) were discussed.

Listening to the views of local farmers, fishermen, food producers and those living and working in rural areas was top of the agenda at the Assembly Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development meeting today. The Committee was reviewing the feedback from local stakeholders and planning its priorities.

Agriculture Committee Welcomes Ministerial Re-think on Compensation Scheme

The Assembly’s Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development has welcomed the Minister’s re-think on compensation arrangements for Tuberculosis (TB) and Brucellosis in cattle. Earlier this year the Committee voiced its opposition to the original proposals on table values for compensation.

MLAs Visit National Ploughing Championship
The Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development will travel this week to Athy, Co Kildare to attend the National Ploughing Championships. Whilst there, they will meet the Northern Ireland Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Michelle O’Neill MLA and the Irish Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Mr Simon Coveney TD as well as Members of the Joint Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture.
