European Week for Waste Reduction 2015

The NI Assembly is participating in the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR), 21st -29th November 2015, which aims to encourage householders, businesses, schools and organisations to take positive action on reducing their waste!

With the Northern Ireland theme focusing on food waste prevention the Northern Ireland Assembly will be getting on board and encouraging everyone to “Love Food Hate Waste” this EWWR!

As part of this Eurest ran an educational and practical session teaching building users how to cook with everyday left over foods, a delicious potato and scallion soup and a bacon, cheese and leek tart.  The recipes can be found here.

With Northern Ireland taking part in the European wide call to action each year since the campaign began, this year everyone is encouraged to get involved by pledging to do one thing differently to reduce food waste in your home or workplace.

The Love Food Hate Waste theme is very relevant as we can all stand to make the most of our food due to ever increasing food prices and less available income, so we would really encourage our residents to get involved in some of the really simple actions available such as downloading the Love Food Hate Waste App and making one of the many recipes available through www.lovefoodhatewaste.com

The Love Food Hate Waste campaign aims to help everyone make the most of their food, and money, by making some simple changes to the way they manage their food. Tips include writing a meal plan for the week before doing the weekly shop; checking the date labels on your purchases to ensure that you get the longest life from your product and even how to cook some delicious and tasty recipes using the bits and pieces from your store cupboard and fridge.

As well as concentrating on food waste, we would encourage people to make more of an effort to reduce waste in any way they can. Some ideas of ways you can help include

  • Use tableware instead of disposable items
  • Use the right bin for recycling – plastic coffee cup lid in the yellow bag, paper coffee cup in the green bag
  • Emails and attachments - think before you print and only print the pages you need
  • Dispose if IT consumables in the designated bins
  • Remember to switch off light when you leave a room
