Motion: Serious Concerns About the TransformED Programme

Proposed:

That this Assembly notes the serious concerns expressed by many school leaders, teachers and academics about the proposed curriculum changes, significant additional workload and cost associated with the Minister of Education’s TransformED programme; recognises the concerns raised by parents about the increase in school closure days due to the programme; agrees that while Northern Ireland needs a fit for purpose school curriculum and associated professional development, this must be pupil-centred and delivered with the support of the education workforce; further notes that these major reforms are being rushed through at a time when teaching unions are engaged in action short of strike due to unsustainable workloads, the school estate is deteriorating, the special educational needs and disabilities crisis is deepening, absence rates remain high and a significant educational attainment gap persists; calls on the Minister of Education to review the pace at which TransformED is being rolled out and the associated impact on teacher workload; and further calls on the Minister to commit to engaging with teachers, academics and parents to inform the future development of the programme.
