Motion: Future of Maternity Services in the Southern Health and Social Care Trust
Proposed:
That this Assembly expresses deep concern at the temporary withdrawal of maternity services from Daisy Hill Hospital; highlights that the loss of inpatient maternity care will inevitably heighten anxiety for many families and force women to travel further for care and treatment; stresses that the rights and safety of women and children must be paramount at all times; shares public concern about the apparent managed decline of services at Daisy Hill Hospital, particularly in light of the loss of general emergency surgery; is alarmed that Craigavon Area Hospital will now be expected to oversee almost one in four of all births in Northern Ireland despite a significant number of consultant posts remaining vacant and concerns surrounding capacity; believes, in light of this, that steps must be taken to increase, and stabilise, staffing levels in both Craigavon Area Hospital and Daisy Hill Hospital; calls on the Minister of Health to confirm if he will oppose the strategic reduction in services at Daisy Hill Hospital; and further calls on the Minister to work with the Southern Health and Social Care Trust to set out a clear timeline for the pathway to restoration of maternity services in Daisy Hill Hospital on a safe and sustainable basis.
