Earlier meeting of the Assembly under Standing Order 11 - 21 July 2022

A valid notice has been received from 30 Members, in accordance with Standing Order 11,
requiring that the Assembly should meet at a date earlier than that to which it stood
adjourned.

I previously advised the parties that more notice would be required to put arrangements in
place for any recall during the summer recess, particularly given that significant work was
being carried out on the broadcasting infrastructure for the Assembly Chamber.

Therefore, the Assembly is hereby summoned to meet in the Senate Chamber on
Tuesday 26 July 2022 at 12pm. The purpose for which the Assembly has been
summoned is to elect a Speaker and Deputy Speakers and to debate the following motion:

Motion title: Cost of Living Crisis

“That this Assembly recognises the immense hardship facing people and families across
Northern Ireland caused by rising energy, fuel and food bills; expresses concern at the
latest information from the Office for National Statistics which places inflation at 9.4% and
suggests that real terms pay has retreated by 2.8% over the last 12 months; rejects the
stated approach of all Conservative Party leadership candidates to oppose inflationmatching
pay increases for public sector workers who guided us through the Covid-19
pandemic; declares a cost of living emergency requiring immediate intervention from
Ministers; and calls on Ministers to work collectively to introduce direct support schemes to
assist every household in Northern Ireland affected by the cost of living crisis.”

I will be meeting with party whips at 12pm on Friday 22 July to agree the arrangements for
the debate.

I remind Members that if the Assembly is unable to elect a Speaker and Deputy Speakers, it
cannot proceed to debate the motion.
