The Assembly met at noon, the Acting Speaker, Mr Dickson, in the Chair.
1. Speaker's Business
Simultaneous Translation
The Acting Speaker informed Members of the Assembly Commissions' decision to provide simultaneous translation in Irish only at this time. The Acting Speaker said that should circumstances change arrangements would be put in place to facilitate Ulster Scots translation subject to availability of interpreters.
Assembly proceedings
The Acting Speaker confirmed that the sitting had been convened following receipt of a valid notice (Appendix 1). The notice was signed by not less than 30 Members, in accordance with Standing Order 11.
2. Election of Speaker and Deputy Speakers
The Acting Speaker outlined the procedure for the election of a Speaker under Standing Order 4.
Mr Matthew O'Toole nominated Mr Patsy McGlone as a candidate for the Office of Speaker and Ms Cara Hunter seconded the nomination.
Mr Doug Beattie nominated Mr Mike Nesbitt as a candidate for the Office of Speaker and Mr John Stewart seconded the nomination.
Mr Patsy McGlone indicated his agreement to accept the nomination.
Mr Mike Nesbitt indicated his agreement to accept the nomination.
Debate ensued.
The Question being put that Mr Patsy McGlone be Speaker of the Assembly, the Motion was negatived by cross-community vote (Division 1).

The undersigned Members of the Northern Ireland Assembly give notice to the Speaker, under Standing Order 11, that the Assembly should meet urgently to elect a Speaker and Deputy Speakers, appoint a First Minister and deputy First Minister and all other Executive Ministers and to debate the following motion:
Appointment of Executive
That this Assembly expresses deep concern at the deepening cost of living crisis; is further concerned that the ongoing instability at Westminster has compounded these financial pressures; and supports the urgent convening of an Executive to support our public services and provide urgent help for those struggling with the cost of living crisis.
