Reduce the number of members of the Assembly returned for each constituency.

BE IT ENACTED by being passed by the Northern Ireland Assembly and assented to by Her Majesty as follows:

Reduction of number of members returned for each constituency

1.—(1) In section 33(2) of the Northern Ireland Act 1998 (numbers of members returned for each constituency), for “six” substitute “five”.

(2) The amendment made by subsection (1) does not have effect until the first Assembly election after the 2016 election.

(3) In subsection (2)—

“Assembly election” means an election under section 31 or 32 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998 (whichever occurs first), and

“2016 election” means the election held in 2016 in accordance with section 31(1) of that Act.

Short title

2. This Act may be cited as the Assembly Members (Reduction of Numbers) Act (Northern Ireland) 2016.
