Recycling measures in Northern Ireland Assembly for 2008

16 April 2008

All recycling measures that are in place in the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Estate Maintenance, Department of Finance and Personnel, manage the waste and recycling for Parliament Buildings and the Stormont Estate. Estate Maintenance have tasked a company called SITA to take over the collection of the waste and recycling. SITA collect the waste on a daily basis and segregate it at source into dedicated waste streams. The waste streams include paper, plastic, cardboard and tins. All glass used at Parliament Buildings and Annexe C is also recycled, this was not previously recorded however it is being recorded now. Estate Maintenance has advised that a conservative estimate for this would be in the region of 250kg per week.

The Northern Ireland Assembly has installed over 200 recycling bins since June 2006 to facilitate the recycling of; glass, paper, newspapers, magazines, cardboard, plastic and aluminum cans. A contract is also in place for recycling all printer consumables from Parliament Buildings and constituency offices. The Support Services Contractor has also adopted the Assembly’s recycling policy and has all of its used cooking oil collected and recycled.

Our most recent figures show that the Assembly is currently recycling 32% of its total waste. In addition to this the Assembly will be introducing new recycling streams in the future such as food waste.
