Session: Session currently unavailable

Date: 26 November 2015

Reference: COFMDFM 02/15/16

The Committee for the Office of the First Minister and deputy First Minister has today met with Lord Boswell, Chair of the House of Lords European Committee, to discuss Prime Minister David Cameron’s proposals for EU Reform.

Speaking after the meeting Committee Chairperson, Mike Nesbitt MLA said: “The Committee welcomed the opportunity to discuss proposed reform of the European Union with Lord Boswell. This is a matter of strategic significance to the people of Northern Ireland with implications for agriculture, business, transport and many other areas of life.”

Deputy Chairperson Chris Lyttle added: “We are pleased that Lord Boswell has taken the time today to hear the views of the Committee on the subject of EU reform. A key strand of our discussion was around communication, and engagement like this helps to raise the profile of the debate on the role of the UK in the European Union, and the unique position of Northern Ireland on this issue.”

The Chairperson concluded: “While of course there were divergent views around the table, it is vital that the conversation on EU reform continues, not only between elected representatives but also amongst the general public. The Committee will continue to monitor how the Executive is feeding into the UK Government’s EU reform agenda.”
