Session: 2013/2014

Date: 20 March 2014

The Assembly’s Committee for Social Development today visited Newry where they held their weekly meeting in Bagenal’s Castle. Members also met with the Deputy Lord Mayor and Council Officials to discuss town centre regeneration and the implementation of the Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy in Newry and the wider constituency area.

As part of today’s visit, the Committee also visited Newry town centre to see the recently completed ‘Three Ways Community Centre and 3G Pitch’ which has been funded by the Neighbourhood Renewal Project.

Following the visit Committee Deputy Chairperson Micky Brady MLA said: “Today’s visit was arranged as part of a wider Committee outreach programme to bring our work to members’ constituencies and to see for ourselves the impact of departmental policies at a local level.

“Newry and Mourne council have taken a very active role in tackling disadvantage and deprivation and we were very encouraged to see how Neighbourhood Renewal and town Centre regeneration initiatives are having a very tangible and positive impact on the wider Community.

Mr Brady continued: “Members were particularly impressed by the new Three Ways Community Centre and to hear more about the benefits the facilities and range of development programmes provide for local people.

Mr Brady concluded: “The redrawing of council boundaries may present some challenges but we would hope that the council can build on its experience to ensure further successful projects are developed to tackle social deprivation and to encourage the regeneration of town centres”.
