Synopsis: The Committee for Employment and Learning has just launched an inquiry that will examine the level and quality of support available to young people with learning disabilities leaving full-time education.

Session: 2013/2014

Date: 23 January 2014

Reference: E&L 05/13/14

The Committee for Employment and Learning has just launched an inquiry that will examine the level and quality of support available to young people with learning disabilities leaving full-time education.

As part of its inquiry, the Committee will take an in-depth look at the availability of further education, employment and training opportunities to ensure that current provision meets the particular needs of young people and their families. Members are also keen to hear more about the barriers faced by young people with learning disabilities and to consider how provision can be improved.

Speaking at the launch of the inquiry, Committee Chairperson Robin Swann MLA, said: "For many young people, the transition into training, further education or employment can be daunting; for those with learning disabilities, it can be a particularly challenging experience.

"Over the coming months, we will hear from a wide range of individuals and organisations, with the aim of getting the fullest possible picture of the types of services available. We are particularly keen to hear from young people and their families to learn more about how effective and accessible current services are and about any existing gaps in provision.

Mr Swann concluded: "My Committee is very aware that this is not just an issue for the Department for Employment and Learning; it cuts across many Departments and agencies, therefore we feel very strongly that a co-ordinated approach will be essential. We will be working hard to ensure that, at the end of this inquiry, we will be able to bring forward a robust set of recommendations to ensure that every young person with learning disabilities in Northern Ireland can get the extra help and support they need to achieve their full potential."

Listen to Committee Chairperson, Robin Swann MLA, outline why the Committee is undertaking this inquiry:
