A special showcase event to highlight the range of international education programmes and funding available to local primary and post-primary schools was held today in Parliament Buildings.

The “World in your Classroom’ hosted by the Assembly’s Education Committee in partnership with the British Council Northern Ireland saw pupils and teachers from over 20 local schools  try their hand at a range of fun activities including Chinese Calligraphy and interactive language learning activities.

Speaking after the event, Committee Chairperson Mervyn Storey MLA said: “The Committee was delighted to host today’s event and to see for ourselves how international learning programmes can both supplement and complement the overall learning experiences of our local children.

“As the global economy becomes more and more important, it is crucial that our young people take every opportunity to learn languages, gain knowledge about other cultures and to acquire the skills necessary to compete internationally.

“The Committee wants to encourage the uptake of these funding opportunities in as wide a range of schools as possible and in all parts of Northern Ireland.  We are very keen that this event will mark the beginning of successful and effective partnership between funding authorities and local schools”.

David Alderdice, Director of the British Council in Northern Ireland said: "We are delighted that the Assembly’s Education Committee agreed to host and support today’s “World in your Classroom” event. This has been a wonderful opportunity for the British Council in Northern Ireland to highlight the exciting international opportunities and resources which exist for Northern Ireland's schools.

“Today’s event was also a great opportunity for us to showcase the new EU-funded Erasmus+ programme which provides funding to support our schools and those working in education to develop European partnerships and links. We are keen to encourage more schools to get involved in Erasmus+ and other international school programmes."
