Reference: SD 07/11/12

Members of the Assembly Committee for Social Development visited the North West today to look at a number of regeneration sites, including the former Fort George Military site which has been earmarked for mixed use development and new Peace Bridge.

Speaking after the visit, Committee Chairperson, Alex Maskey MLA said: “The Committee was delighted to be given the opportunity to visit Derry today and to see some truly innovative regeneration projects first hand. We were particularly interested in the Fort George site which, once completed, will help to transform and revitalise the City’s riverfront.

“The Fort George Site will also be the location for the construction of the Project Kelvin Telehouse, an exciting development which will have the potential to bring economic prosperity and much needed jobs to the North West.

“As well as information on current projects, today’s briefing from Ilex highlighted a number of exciting future plans to regenerate the city. The Committee looks forward to keeping abreast of all developments and to revisiting the city in the very near future.”

Today’s visit was hosted by Ilex the Urban Regeneration Company which also briefed the Committee on its ambitious future plans for continued economic, physical and social regeneration of the city.
