Justice Committee Welcomes First Meeting with Chief Constable

Session: 2011/2012

Date: 15 February 2012

Reference: JUS 04/11/12

The Assembly Committee for Justice welcomes the first appearance of the Chief Constable, Matt Baggott, at the Committee. The meeting will take place on Thursday 16 February.

Topics that will be discussed include the PSNI budget; plans on how to implement cost savings; and challenges facing the PSNI from resource cut backs.

Committee Chairman, Paul Givan MLA, commented: “The PSNI budget accounts for 65% of the overall budget of the Department of Justice.  It is therefore important that the Committee has this opportunity to discuss resource issues and how front line policing will be protected.

“We are looking forward to welcoming the Chief Constable to the first formal briefing with the Committee and it is hoped the meetings will become regular occurrences.”

Members will also discuss the PSNI’s performance in reducing avoidable delay in the criminal justice system, along with policing and human rights.

The meeting will take place in Room 30, Parliament Buildings at 2.00pm on Thursday 16 February.  Members of the public and the media are welcome to attend.  The meeting will be streamed live on the Assembly website: http://nia1.me/12 and the agenda can be read in full here http://nia1.me/qy.
