Committee Seeks Views On Top Priorities in Agriculture

Session: 2011/2012

Date: 10 August 2011

Reference: AGR 01/11/12

What priorities should the Northern Ireland Assembly Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development set as its top concerns? That’s the question that the Committee is asking, not only of farmers and fishermen, but of those who are involved in the agri-food sector as well as people who are living and working in rural areas.

The Committee is asking those with particular interest in agriculture and rural development matters to offer views on which issues it should be concentrating on as it begins its new session in September.

Speaking about the initiative, Committee Chairperson, Paul Frew MLA said: “The Committee is tasked with examining the work of the Department, and holding the Minister to account. However, our role is much broader than that. We also play an important part in supporting and advising the Minister and bringing forward issues and proposals that we believe will makea difference to those working in, or who dependent upon, the agriculture sector.

“More information on how to become involved is available on the Assembly website. We hope that people will see this as a real opportunity to contribute to the work of the Assembly.”
