Stormont Committee Visits Giant’s Causeway

Session: 2007/2008

Date: 14 March 2008

Reference: ENV 02/07/08

The Committee for the Environment today held a public meeting at the Causeway Hotel to look at the National Trust/Moyle District Council proposals for a visitors’ centre at the Giant’s Causeway. The Committee was also briefed on a National Trust environmental report “ Shifting Shores: Living with a Changing Coastline”.

The Chairperson, Patsy McGlone, MLA, said, “This local meeting has allowed us to see just how important the Giant’s Causeway—a world heritage site—is for Northern Ireland; not just in terms of tourism but also in preserving and protecting our local environment.

“The reports we have had today from the National Trust and Moyle District Council also emphasise the real benefits to be gained from joined up working and we would wish to encourage and support this strategy. We look forward to receiving their progress reports on the development of the project being undertaken.”

The Committee also inspected the Giant’s Causeway as part of their visit to the Causeway Coast.
