outline of career:

Member of SDLP since1980; have served on the SDLP Central Executive and General Council. Current Party Officer - International Secretary.
Have been a District Councillor on Down District Council since 1985, and was subsequently re-elected in 1989, 1993, 1997, 2001 and 2005. Former Vice-Chairman and Chairman of Down District Council. Have served on all the statutory committees.
Chairman of South Down Constituency Council SDLP.
Worked as Parliamentary Assistant to Eddie McGrady MP from August 1987 to November 2003.
Elected to the Northern Ireland Forum in May 1996.
Elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in November 2003 and March 2007. Served on the Assembly's Economic Challenges Committee and also on the Programme for Government Committee for the SDLP.
Appointed Minister Designate for Social Development for the new Executive.
