political career:

Alasdair was first elected to Belfast City Council in 1977 and represented the Laganbank (Ormeau) ward for many years. In 1995 he was the first ever Nationalist to be elected Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast. In May 1996 he was elected to represent South Belfast on the Inter-Party Talks Forum and in 1998 topped the poll in South Belfast in the Assembly elections. He has comfortably retained his Assembly seat in every election since. In 2001 he retired from Belfast City Council and withdrew from full time medical pratice to concentrate on Assembly duties. Alasdair has stood as an SDLP Candidate for South Belfast in every parliamentary election since 1979 steadily building support. In the May 2005 general election he became the first ever Nationalist MP elected to represent South Belfast, a traditional unionist seat. Alasdair was elected Deputy Leader of the SDLP in February 2004 and is currently the Party Spokesperson on Enterprise,Trade and Investment.
