Brief outline of public/ political career:	Member of the SDLP since 1972. Carmel stood down from Belfast City Council for the Balmoral electoral area in June 2008. Assembly member for South Belfast since 1998. Carmel is a member of the Health Committee and is the SDLP Spokesperson on Health and Public Safety since 2003. She was appointed Minister for Employment and Learning in the Northern Ireland Executive until its suspension in 2002. She was the founding and present Chair of the All Party Group on International Development since 1999. She is Chair of the Standards and Privileges Committee in the NI Assembly and a member of the Assembly and Executive Review Committee.
