Marine Protection Bill

That this Assembly calls on the Executive to commit fully to the policies of the United Kingdom Marine Bill and to develop a Northern Ireland Marine Bill to address devolved responsibilities, including to allow the creation of a locally accountable Northern Ireland Marine Management Organisation; to address the need for a new system of marine spatial planning based on the ecosystem approach; to integrate fisheries management; and to ensure better protection of marine wildlife through a comprehensive network of Marine Protected Areas by 2012.

Human Rights in China

That this Assembly notes that the Chinese authorities pledged to improve human rights standards on winning the bid for the 2008 Olympic Games; further notes the human rights infringements during the Games; urges the Chinese Government to live up to its promises; appeals to the Chinese Government to engage with the Tibetan Government in exile to reach a peaceful solution; and calls on the Executive, in line with international practice, to raise the issue of human rights in any dealings with Chinese Government representatives.

Review of Environmental Governance

Secondary School Enrolment in Bangor

That this Assembly express its concern that 50 post primary students from the Bangor area were unable to obtain places in North Down secondary schools and that the Minister of Education refused to allow secondary schools in Bangor with spare capacity to increase their enrolment; and calls for the enrolment of Bangor Secondary Schools to be increased so that this situation is not repeated.

University of Ulster Magee Campus

That this Assembly notes that the University of Ulster Magee Campus has only increased full time equivalent under-graduate student numbers to approximately 3,000; calls on the Minister for Employment and Learning to ensure that the strategic intention to grow the Campus at Magee to 10,000 students is delivered in a timely fashion; and calls on the Minister for Employment and Learning to discuss the potential for cross border investment in Magee with his counterpart in the Dublin Government.

Ballymurphy Civilians Killed in 1971

That this Assembly extends its support and sympathy to the families of the 11 Ballymurphy civilians shot dead by the British Parachute Regiment in the three days following the introduction of internment on 9 August 1971; calls on the UK Government to apologise and acknowledges that those killed were innocent victims; and supports the families’ demand for an independent international investigation into all of the circumstances.

Forest and Woodland Targets

Plastic Bag Levy

That this Assembly supports in principle a levy on plastic bags and notes the French Government’s move to impose a full legal ban on plastic bags by 2010; and calls on the Minister of the Environment to bring forward legislation, as a matter of priority, to introduce a levy on plastic carrier bags and to develop a plan to phase out the use of plastic bags entirely.
