Parliament Buildings to be Illuminated for Armistice Day

Parliament Buildings will be lit up in red on the evening of Wednesday 11th November 2015 for the first time to mark Armistice Day. It was one of four days the Assembly Commission selected itself for the Building to be illuminated during the year.

Students Challenge Local Politicians to “Talk Politics” in Armagh

Following on from a series of successful ‘Let's Talk Politics’ events aimed at young people, sixth form students from schools in Newry and Armagh and South Down constituencies will take up the challenge to quiz their local political representatives on the issues that matter to them and their local communities.

Act of Remembrance 2015

On 2 November 2015, I wrote to every Member outlining the arrangements I was making for Armistice Day this year and my focus to ensure “that as many Members as possible should have an opportunity to mark remembrance”. I was greatly encouraged to see people from all political persuasions and none gathered in the Great Hall on Wednesday last for what observers consider to be a record attendance. Many people welcomed the united nature and tone of the programme but I clearly appreciate that the event did not satisfy the expectations of all.

Assembly hosts inaugural Burns Night at Parliament Buildings

The Speaker of the Assembly, Mitchel McLaughlin MLA, today hosted the first official Burns Night celebration in Parliament Buildings. The celebration of Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns, took place in the Great Hall at 6.30pm.

The Speaker has called a meeting of the Assembly Commission tomorrow (Wed 17 February) to discuss issues raised in recent days regarding the expenses regime for Assembly Members and to agree further actions to address these concerns.

Speaker McLaughlin recognises role of Royal British Legion

Mitchel McLaughlin MLA, Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, tonight held a reception in Parliament Buildings for the Royal British Legion. The reception was attended by around 150 members of the Legion and MLAs.

Speaker welcomes public to Assembly Women's Week events
