1.    Minutes of the meeting held on 23 rd January 2008

Agreed: The draft minutes were agreed.

2.    Matters Arising

Members noted a research paper, prepared by Assembly Research Services, providing a comparison on apprenticeships in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

3.    Chairperson’s Business

10:37am Mr Butler joined the meeting

Members noted a number of items of correspondence and agreed the proposed responses.

4.    Departmental update on the position at Seagate Technology

The Committee received a briefing from departmental officials Patricia McAuley, Director of Preparation for Work Division, and Siobhan Logue, Assistant Director of Preparation for Work Division, on the position at Seagate Technology. The briefing was followed by a question and answer session.

5.    Second Departmental monitoring report on Training for Success

The Committee received an update briefing from departmental officials Catherine Bell, Deputy Secretary, and Nuala Kerr, Director of Skills & Industry Division, on the Department’s roll-out of the Training for Success Programme. The briefing was followed by a question and answer session.

6.    Briefing from Include Youth

The Committee received a briefing from representatives of ‘Include Youth’: Koulla Yiasouma, Director of Include Youth, Paddy Mooney, Manager of the ‘Give and Take’ Programme, Louise Kidd and Alan Black (‘Give and Take’ participants), on the work in Include Youth and issues of concern. The briefing was followed by a question and answer session.

7.    Departmental Press Notices

Members noted a number of Departmental press notices issued recently.

8.    Any Other Business

Member noted an invitation from the CCEA to attend the “getting vocational qualifications right” conference on the 7 th February. Members also noted that the Committee meeting on 6 th February will conclude with a working lunch.

9.    Date, time and place of next meeting

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, 6 th February 2008 at 10.30am in Room 135, Parliament Buildings.

The Chairperson adjourned the meeting at 12:53pm.
