Committee Expresses Opposition to Enforcement Cameras
Date: Wednesday, 02 July 2014
The Committee for Regional Development has today voiced its strong opposition to departmental plans to introduce enforcement cameras in bus lanes in Belfast.
Speaking during the meeting, Committee Chairperson Mr Jimmy Spratt MLA, stated: "This is the most half-baked idea that has ever been brought before the Committee. It would appear that the Department has given no thought to the proposals nor has it presented any viable evidence for why this proposal is necessary. The Committee is further concerned that there has been no consideration of or examination into other options.
"The Committee is not in the game of passing poor legislation and we have been very clear in delivering this message to the Department. We are fearful that this is nothing more than a revenue generating tax, as has been proven in cities all over the UK. The Committee will therefore not be party to heaping more pressure on drivers in our towns and cities".
