Press Release

New Assembly Register of Members' Interest Published

Session: 2011/2012

Date: Wednesday, 29 June 2011

Reference: S&P 01/11/12

The Northern Ireland Assembly Committee on Standards and Privileges today published the new Register of Members’ Interests on the Assembly website.

In welcoming its publication, Alastair Ross MLA, the Chairperson of the Committee on Standards and Privileges, said: “The Committee on Standards and Privileges is committed to building public confidence through openness. I therefore welcome the publication of the new Register of Members’ Interests which is a keystone of transparency at the Assembly.

“The new Register ensures that everyone can see details of Members’ outside interests. The fact that Members have been required to register all sources of outside remuneration, hours worked in relation to such remuneration, and family members who benefit in any way from Assembly Members’ expenditure demonstrates the Assembly’s commitment to openness and transparency.”

Notes to Editors:

1. All Assembly Members are obliged to adhere to the Assembly’s Code of Conduct and Guide to the Rules relating to the Conduct of Members (“the Code and Guide”). The Code and Guide provide for Members to have to register their interests and for there to be twelve categories of details that must be registered. The Register of Members’ Interests contains details of any interests that Members have in respect of each category.

2. The Register of Members’ Interests can be accessed on the Northern Ireland Assembly website.

3. Members holding remunerated elected mandates outside of the Assembly have registered the number of hours they work in respect of these mandates. The Committee has recognised that it may be difficult to distinguish hours worked exclusively on these interests as an overlap of duties often occurs with the role of Assembly Member.

4. Enquiries about the work of the Committee should be directed to the Clerk of Standards, Paul Gill, Room 284, Parliament Buildings, Stormont, Belfast BT4 3XX. Telephone 028 9052 0333.
