Committee Members Get on Their Bikes

Members of the Assembly’s Regional Development Committee get on their bikes at Gilnahirk Primary School

Members of the Assembly’s Regional Development Committee got on their bikes at Gilnahirk Primary School, using all their negotiation skills to navigate a cycling proficiency challenge set up to help promote the ‘Bike It’ project. The project encourages more children to cycle to school and Gilnahirk Primary is racing ahead as a participant of the project, with 200 bikes coming to school every day.

Members who took the challeng were awarded a score out of ten from an expert judging panel of students but they were shown a clean pair of wheels by the pupils.

The students were able to show the Committee a thing or two on and off the bicycles as they also demonstrated the safety measures they take and how to fix a puncture and make sure a bike is ready for the road.

Chairperson of the Committee, Jimmy Spratt MLA was delighted to see the good work of Gilnahirk Primary as pupils reap the benefits of taking part in the ‘Bike It’ project: “The benefits of cycling to school are easy to see – from helping children to be physically active every day to fewer cars and less congestion on the roads. We’re delighted to see the high levels of participation at Gilnahirk Primary School and we would encourage other schools to get involved in the ‘Bike It’ project.”
