Round Table Discussion with Community Relations Groups

OFMdFM Committee round table discussion with Community Relations GroupsOn Wednesday 28 March 2012 Members of the Committee met with representatives of a wide range of community relations organisations and the Community Relations Council in the Long Gallery of Parliament Buildings.  Participants discussed a number of topical issues including:

  • examples of successful programmes which engage and support young people in ending segregation, sectarianism and racism;
  • good practice and outcomes in addressing rural segregation;
  • approaches to reducing the number of ‘peace walls’;
  • the opportunities and challenges of a decade of centenaries;
  • shared housing – lessons to be learned.

Committee Chairperson Tom Elliott MLA said: “We were very pleased to welcome the CRC and community groups to Parliament Buildings. Improving community relations is something that our Committee takes seriously and we were impressed by the experience of those groups who are working on the ground. I know that we will be revisiting these issues and continuing to work with community groups to build a better and less divided society for all our people.”
